Centralized data collection is the cookie we can’t stop eating
Step away from centralized data collection and find decentralized, transparent, and more secure technologies.
You know that there is a huge problem with using the internet. We provide too much information to centralized entities with our data. We have no control. You accept the privacy statements when using a new app or opening an account on a company website.
Are you comfortable with your location, IP addresses, content, contacts, images, microphone access, and other personally identifiable or device information collected?
What’s the big deal?
Suppose you live an average and ordinary life.
What’s the problem with companies using the data to advertise customized products and services that we would appreciate and enjoy?
Algorithms that understand our behavior can send us endless streams of videos and posts that can entertain and educate us.
Data collection that is put to “good” use
The problem is that this data that a centralized organization owns can use the information to manipulate, expose our privacy, and perhaps even threaten our safety.
We all want to believe that our data will be used for good.
Define the word “good.”
That’s the problem. It is up to an individual to interpret what “good” means to them.
In other words, have a centralized organization define what is “good” and make that decision for all of us.
Tell influencers who build their content creation business on a significant social media platform to stop using it. Or try to convince consumers not to approve privacy statements when they want to shop online or enjoy entertaining apps.
That’s the answer.
That’s like telling someone to stop eating processed food.
We know we should, but it is so hard to stop. Processed food is everywhere, and it is so delicious. How can someone achieve the willpower to stop?
We can stop if they have a better alternative.
Sure, getting used to eating whole fruits and vegetables may take time. To resist the grab-and-go snack bars and opt for something you make yourself.
It is an option that can take hold.
For our data, we have options.
Build decentralized apps on the blockchain to create an immutable ledger that can’t be altered or deleted. Because it is decentralized, no one entity has control. The risk of a single point of failure makes it impossible to hack.
With smart contracts, the code gives the direction or action, eliminating the need for human judgment and decision-making in certain situations.
It is transparent about how data is stored, collected, and used.
Decentralized Options
Let’s take a great example of how blockchain technology is solving the data privacy problem when collecting information with surveys.
BlockSurvey uses Stacks blockchain to collect, store and distribute private information securely and with complete control by only the user and no one else.
For example, if a healthcare provider wants to survey their patients, they can use BlockSurvey to keep the information gathered private and secure. The patient can answer the questions anonymously, and the data will be sent through encryption directly to the provider. Only the provider can see the answers through Decentralized Identity DID and private storage with Gaia. Please visit BlockSurvey’s site for more specific information on how the technology works.
Another company, Zion, uses blockchain to build a decentralized social media platform. This platform solves privacy and security issues and incentivizes users by earning money for content publishing and participation.
How can we market to consumers?
If you don’t have all that juicy data, how can you tell the world about your products and services?
Data collection would happen using privacy-enhancing technologies (zero-knowledge proofs, DIDs, etc.), allowing businesses to analyze customer data without compromising privacy.
Community building is another way marketers can gain valuable insight and feedback from their members. See my article on community building for examples.
As a consumer, you should regain control of your data and content. Understand that there are options out there. While they are far from perfect, they provide positive solutions and opportunities to build upon.
What can you do now?
Stop eating processed foods (step away from the centralized platforms) and find better alternatives (decentralized applications built with blockchain).
Not sure where to start? Overwhelmed by the “geek-speak”? Find a Web3 educator (Tokens Square is one, hint hint) that can guide you and empower you with the information you need to make sound decisions for yourself.
