How to use Web3 at an IRL event: Decisions and Design
What decisions need to be made when creating a token for an event?
Last week I wrote about my plan to implement NFTs into the upcoming Founders Live event I am organizing. If you missed that article, read it here .
This week I will cover how I put my plan into action.
First on the agenda is to create the token and decide what the holders will receive in benefits.
While I could offer the token as a collectible and proof that someone attended the event, more ideas came about. How will people respond?
Because the attendees are new to this subject, it needs to be as user-friendly and straightforward as possible.
If you consider implementing NFTs in your business, reading about my experience will help build your confidence and give you some direction before diving in.
The Decision and Design - Before the Event
Selecting the image and name for the token
Because the upcoming Founders Live event focuses on celebrating our local startups, finding an image for the NFT to be a well-recognized symbol of our city was only fitting. I chose our iconic RiverFront Park Pavilion as the image.
Instead of using the word "NFT," attendees will be collecting "landmarks." I avoided "scary" terms such as NFT, blockchain, and crypto, if possible.
Each event throughout 2023 will have its exclusive landmark token for attendees to claim. Creating a theme for the images allows for consistency and novelty. This Pavilion token is part of the Landmark collection.
Image design
I called upon my friend, Patti Hinman, to help create the Pavilion design. Not only did she enjoy designing the artwork for the token, but she will also have her name included with the landmark and recorded permanently on the blockchain. When people look back at the image year from now, she will have proof that it was her original work.
You can't get that unique feature with a printed coupon or plastic card.
Creating the token
Creating the token was quite simple. It is just a matter of filling out a form. The most challenging part - knowing what to write!
When creating an NFT, here are some of the standard questions you need to answer beforehand:
Description: This should tell the story of the NFT. Think of it as an advertisement to attract and retain ownership.
Attributes: The unique features. I included the artist's name, location, who it was for, the event name, and rarity (1 of 1).
Location: I listed the event venue. This is optional.
Quantity: Is this the only one of its kind? Or are there many editions?
Utility
Now the fun part is, what will the attendees do with it?
Because we are testing this new concept, I want to avoid jumping in too deep. A few ideas of uses include:
Attendees who collect all the landmarks throughout the year
Holders of landmarks will receive discounts and perks provided by local businesses and sponsors.
Reward noteworthy landmarks for the founders who pitched at the event.
The winner of the pitch competition will also receive a unique landmark for bragging rights and certification of the award.
The Pitch
I created slides for the presentation to go through the step-by-step process of explaining the landmarks and how to claim them.
As stated above, I avoided specific terms and kept them as general as possible. Sneaking in a little blockchain undetected was my primary focus.
Challenges
My goal is to see most event attendees claim the token easily and start to formulate ideas of what possibilities are available with this new technology.
What did I ultimately decide to do with the landmark's utility?
Did the event attendees enthusiastically claim the token without any problems?
Stay tuned next time for more details!
